The poles that are coated in golden leaves mark the contrasting measurements, while the untreated natural pole marks the origin. They are more than twice taller than an average person, and half shorter than an average tree. Like the trees, they become part of the landscape alphabet. They recall the stainless steel poles of Walter De Maria’s Lightning Field arranged in a grid over an area of 1 mile × 1 km that delineate the territory and Duchamp’s 3 Standard Stoppages that explicate the open possibilities of the single measurement.
Pares is chosen as the site for the reflection of the poles in the water. The installation can also be created in other sites with the same orientation and placing of poles from one another. The three measurements - 10 Italian feet, 10 Innsbruck feet and 10 Viennese feet are marked by golden poles from their respective radii from a neutral pole at an origin. This translates into 0.51 metres, 0.34 metres and 0.32 metres in the metric system. Each golden pole is orientated towards the geographical origin of their measurement unit: Rome, Innsbruck and Vienna.
